Question

Is there any Hadith that tells us how to respond to someone who says: Jazakallahu khayran?

Answer

I haven’t come across any response in the Hadith. Some people say: Amin (O Allah accept) and others says: Wa iyyak (same to you).

Both make sense and will not be wrong, although they are not proven from the Hadith. One should not consider these responses as sunnah though.

Note: Some people cite a narration in Sahih Ibn Hibban; Al Ihsan, Hadith: 7279 in which the words: Wa antum fa jazakumullahu khayran appear. According to the writer, this is a misinterpretation.

The reason for this is that when the Sahabi (radiyallahu ‘anhu) told Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) jazakAllahu khayran, Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) replied: Wa antum fa jazakumullahu khayran (rather, you deserve to be told; Jazakumullahu khayran) and he went on praising the good qualities of the Ansar.

In actual fact Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) was saying to them (in this case) I should be telling you JazakAllahu khayr, instead of you telling me.

This explains why Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) gave that particular reply. It doesn’t mean that: wa antum fa jazakumullahu khayran is a standard reply to such a du’a. Rather when the situation is like the above, then this could be said in reply.

And Allah Ta’ala knows best,
