What is the reference for this du’a?

اللهم اجعل نبينا لنا فرطا واجعل حوضه لنا موردا. اللهم احشرنا في زمرته واستعملنا في سنته وتوفنا على ملته

Answer

These words appear in a narration attributed to ‘Ali, the son of ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Abbas (radiyallahu ‘anhuma). It is reported that he would recite a lengthy du’a after Tahajjud Salah, within which these words are found.

However, ‘Allamah Sakhawi (rahimahullah) has stated that he has not come across the chain of narrators.

The meaning is correct. Therefore, it may be recited, but it should not be regarded as a Sunnah du’a nor should it be attributed to ‘Ali ibn ‘Abdillah ibn ‘Abbas (radiyallahu ‘anhuma).

Translation

O Allah, make our Nabi a forerunner for us, and make his pond a place where we drink. O Allah, resurrect us in his company, use us in [the service of] his Sunnah, and grant us death upon his religion.

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.
