A follow up query regarding the tasbih ‘Subhanallahi wa bi hamdihi ‘adada khalqihi’

Question

Can the du’a ‘Subhanallahi wa bi hamdihi ‘adada khalqihi wa rida nafsihi wa zinata ‘arshihi wa midada kalimatihi‘ also be said in evening since the Hadith only mentioned morning?

Answer

The Hadith in Sahih Muslim (Hadith: 2726) does not specify that these words should be recited in the morning.

However, the context of the Hadith explains that Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) advised Sayyidah Juwayriyyah (radiyallahu ‘anha) during the morning. Therefore ‘Allamah Nawawi (rahimahullah) has added the chapter ‘Glorifying Allah at the beginning of the day…’ before this Hadith.

Other Muhaddithun like Imams Ibn Khuzaymah, Imam Ibn Hibban and Imam Bayhaqi (rahimahumullah) have cited this Hadith under the chapter which discusses the rewards of tasbih without specifying a time.

(Sahih Ibn Khuzaymah, before Hadith: 753, Sahih Ibn Hibban; At Taqasim Wal Anwa’ before Hadith: 541, Shu’abul Iman, before Hadith: 502)

The du’a could therefore be recited during the morning as well as any other time.

My Respected Teacher, Mufti ‘Ashiq Ilahi (rahimahullah) had the habit of reciting this beautiful tasbih all the time. Whenever there was silence in his gathering/company, he would be heard reciting this tasbih.
