Question

How sound is the following Hadith reported by Sayyidah Ummu Hani (radiyallahu ‘anha)?

Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said:

“Reciting Alhamdulillah one hundred times is better than giving one hundred saddled and bridled horses in the path of Allah and whoever recites Subhanallah one hundred times it is better than freeing one hundred slaves from the children of Isma’il.” (Musnad Ahmad)

Answer

This narration is recorded in Musnad Ahmad and other Hadith collections as part of a longer narration. Sayyidah Ummu Hani (radiyallahu ‘anha) requested Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) to teach her some dhikr which she could easily recite while seated as she had become elderly. Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) advised her to recite certain adhkar.

Imam Ahmad (rahimahullah) has recorded this narration with two chains that corroborate each other. The Hadith in question is further corroborated and suitable to quote.

(Musnad Ahmad, vol. 6 pg. 344 and pg. 425. Refer: Majma’uz Zawaid, vol. 10 pg. 92)
