Question
There is a Hadith which mentions Sayyiduna Abu Bakr’s regrets before his death.
He mentioned, “There are three things I did, which I now regret, three things I did not do but wish I had done and I regret that I did not get clarification from Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) on three matters…”
Is this authentic?
Answer
Imam Tabarani (rahimahullah) has recorded this narration. The chain consists of a narrator who has been declared very weak by Imam Bukhari (rahimahullah).
‘Allamah Haythami (rahimahullah) states, ‘This is from his unreliable narrations’ [مما أنكر عليه]
(Al Mu’jamul Kabir, Hadith: 43, Majma’uz Zawaid, vol. 5 pg. 203. Also see: Lisanul Mizan, vol. 5 pg. 472-475)
The narration should not be quoted.
