Another narration on the intentions people will have when performing Hajj and ‘Umrah

Question

Kindly translate and authenticate this narration.

عند ذلك يا سلمان يحج الناس إلى هذا البيت الحرام تحج ملوكهم لهوا وتنزها وأغنياؤهم للتجارة ومساكينهم للمسألة وقراؤهم رياء وسمعة

Answer

This is part of a lengthy narration regarding the signs of Qiyamah recorded in Al Jalisus Salihul Kafi Wal Anisun Nasihush Shafi of Abul Faraj ibnul Mu’afa ibn Zakariyya An Nahrawani (Demise: 390 A.H).

(Al Jalisus Salih, vol. 3 pg. 69. Also see: Al Isha’ah Li Ashratis Sa’ah, pg. 159-162)

However, this chain consists of an unreliable narrator.

(Refer: Kitabul Majruhin Minal Muhaddithin of Imam Ibn Hibban, vol. 1 pg. 450)

‘Allamah Suyuti (rahimahullah) has referenced the narration to Tafsir ibn Marduyah which is not published as yet.

(Ad Durrul Manthur, Surah Muhammad, Verse: 18, vol. 13, pg. 384)

A similar narration has been recorded in Tarikh Baghdad and other sources. The Muhaddithun have declared this version unreliable. See here.

Translation

“…At this time O Salman, people will perform Hajj [coming] to this Ka’bah. The kings will perform Hajj as a pastime and tourism, the wealthy will perform Hajj for trade and business, the poor will perform Hajj to beg and the learned will perform Hajj to boast and show off…”

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.
