Clarification of the Hadith that says some Sahabah drank wine

Question

I read a Hadith in Sahih Bukhari that mentions that Hamzah (radiyallahu’anhu) was drunk with some Ansar in an Ansari house. The Prophet (sallallahu’alayhi wasallam) and his companions saw him and told him not to do that. Is this correct and how did the Sahabah consume wine?

Answer

This Hadith has been recorded by Imam Bukhari in his Sahih in several places. However, in one particular narration he mentions an extra sentence that is narrated by Ibn Jurayj (rahimahullah) That sentence is: “and that (incident) was before the prohibition of wine.” (Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith: 2375)

Date of alcohol prohibition

It is well established that alcohol was not declared haram during the early days of Islam. Instead it was only declared haram in the 8th year A.H. (Fath al-Bari vol.10 pg.38) Moreover, the death of Sayyiduna Hamzah (radiyallahu’anhu) occurred long before this prohibition. He was martyred in the middle of Shawwal of the 3rd year A.H. in the battle of Uhud. (Al-Isabah vol.2 pg.106)
