What is meant by ‘riwayatan’ in the following Hadith in Sahih Muslim under the chapter of fasting:

Qala Abu Bakr ‘riwayatan‘ wa qala ‘Amrun ‘yablughu bihin Nabiyya sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam‘

 

Answer

Imam Muslim rahimahullah has reported this Hadith from three of his teachers; Abu Bakr ibn Abi Shaybah, ‘Amr an Naqid and Zuhayr ibn Harb (rahimahumullah).

Abu Bakr ibn Abi Shaybah (rahimahullah) used the words ‘riwayatan‘ after saying ‘from Abu Hurayrah.’
‘Amr An Naqid (rahimahullah) used the words ‘yablughu bihin Nabiyya sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam‘
and Zuhayr ibn Harb (rahimahumullah) used the words ‘anin Nabiyyi sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam‘

All of the above mean that Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (radiyallahu anhu) heard/reports this Hadith from Nabi (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), although ‘riwayatan‘ is not as explicit as the other two. It is therefore called ‘مرفوع حكما’.

Imam Muslim (rahimahullah) explained which words each teacher used. This displays how particular and accurate the Muhaddithun were in transmission.

(١١٥٠) – حدثنا أبو بكر بن أبي شيبة، وعمرو الناقد، وزهير بن حرب قالوا: حدثنا سفيان بن عيينة، عن أبي الزناد، عن الأعرج، عن أبي هريرة رضي الله عنه، – قال أبو بكر بن أبي شيبة: رواية، وقال عمرو: يبلغ به النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم، وقال زهير: عن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم – قال: «إذا دعي أحدكم إلى طعام، وهو صائم، فليقل: إني صائم».

(الثالث: إذا قيل في الحديث عند ذكر الصحابي: يرفعه)، أو رفع الحديث، (أو ينميه أو يبلغ به)، كقول ابن عباس: «الشفاء في ثلاثة: شربة عسل وشرطة محجم وكية نار». رفع الحديث، رواه البخاري.
وروى مالك في الموطأ، عن أبي حازم، عن سهل بن سعد، قال: «كان الناس يؤمرون أن يضع الرجل يده اليمنى على ذراعه اليسرى في الصلاة». قال أبو حازم: لا أعلم إلا أنه ينمي ذلك.
وكحديث الأعرج، عن أبي هريرة يبلغ به: «الناس تبع قريش». أخرجاه.
(أو رواية كحديث الأعرج، عن أبي هريرة رواية: «تقاتلون قوما صغار الأعين») أخرجه الشيخان.
(فكل هذا، وشبهه) قال شيخ الإسلام: كيرويه، ورواه بلفظ الماضي، (مرفوع عند أهل العلم.
وإذا قيل عند التابعي: يرفعه)، أو سائر الألفاظ المذكورة، (فمرفوع مرسل).
