Question

Is this suitable to quote?

ليس أحد إلا يحزن ويفرح، ولكن من أصابته مصيبة فجعلها صبرا، ومن أصاب خيرا جعله شكرا

Answer

The words you have cited are recorded in Tafsir Tabari as the statement of Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Abbas (radiyallahu ‘anhuma) under the commentary of the Verse:

“This is done so that you may not grieve for the things that you miss or be overjoyed at what you gain.” (Surah Al Hadid, Verse: 23)

Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Abbas (radiyallahu ‘anhuma) said: “Every one goes through grief and happiness. However, those who when calamity afflicts them, exercise patience and those who express gratitude when being bestowed with some good [then this is really praiseworthy].”

(Tafsir Tabari; Jami’ul Bayan, Surah Al Hadid, Verse: 23, vol. 22 pg. 421)

Imams Hakim and Abu Bakr Ibn Abi Shaybah (rahimahumallah) have also recorded this with slight variation in the wording. Imam Hakim (rahimahullah) has declared the narration authentic and ‘Allamah Dhahabi (rahimahullah) concurs.

(Mustadrak Hakim, vol. 2 pg. 479, Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah, Hadith: 35934)

The narration may be quoted as the statement of Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Abbas (radiyallahu ‘anhuma).
