Question

Kindly help me find a narration describing when Imam Ahmad, Imam Shafi’i and Imam Yahya ibn Ma’in (rahimahumullah) were travelling together and spent the night. Each of them engaged in their own ‘ibadah for the entire night: Imam Ahmad stood in Salah and recited the entire Quran, Imam Shafi’i resolved 200 fiqhi masail, and Imam ibn Ma’in refuted 200 lies against Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam).

Imam Ibnul Jawzi (rahimahullah) has recorded this incident in Manaqibul Imam Ahmad.

The incident is as follows:

Hilal ibnul ‘Ala (rahimahullah) said: “Imam Shafi’i, Imam Yahya ibn Ma’in and Imam Ahmad ibn Hambal (rahimahumullah) set out to Makkah. When they arrived, they stayed together in one place. Imam Shafi’i and Imam Ibn Ma’in laid down, while Imam Ahmad stood in Salah. In the morning, Imam Shafi’i said, ‘I have served the Muslims by deriving two hundred Fiqh rulings’. When Ibn Ma’in was asked what he did, he replied, ‘I defended the Hadiths of Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) by exposing two hundred liars.’ When Imam Ahmad was asked, He said: ‘I performed several raka’at in which I completed the entire Quran.'”

أخبرنا ابن ناصر، قال: أنبأنا الحسن بن أحمد الفقيه، قال: أخبرنا أبو محمد الحسن بن محمد، قال: حدثنا يوسف بن عمر، قال: حدثنا أحمد بن جعفر، قال: حدثنا أبو محمد بن يونس بن عبد السميع، قال: سمعت هلال ابن العلاء، يقول: خرج الشافعي ويحيى بن معين وأحمد بن حنبل إلى مكة؛ فلما أن صاروا بمكة نزلوا في موضع، فأما الشافعي، فإنه استلقى، ويحيى بن معين أيضا استلقى، وأحمد بن حنبل قائم يصلي، فلما أصبحوا قال الشافعي: لقد عملت للمسلمين مئتي مسألة. وقيل ليحيى بن معين: أي شيء عملت؟ قال: نفيت عن النبي ﷺ مئتي كذاب. وقيل لأحمد بن حنبل: فأنت؟ قال: صليت ركعات ختمت فيها القرآن.
