What is the reference for this Hadith?

Be abundant in seeking Allah’s forgiveness. In your homes, at your table, on your travel, in the market place, in your gatherings. Wherever you may be, for you do not know when the Forgiveness [mercy of all will descend].

 

Answer

This narration is recorded in Nawadirul Usul of Imam Hakim Tirmidhi and Shu’abul Iman of Imam Bayhaqi (rahimahumallah) with slight variations in the wording as the statement of Hasan Al Basri (rahimahullah).

Hasan Al Basri (rahimahullah) said: “Increase in seeking forgiveness in your homes, at your tables, on your pathways, in the marketplaces and in your gatherings and wherever you may be, for you do not know when the blessings/forgiveness of Allah will descend.”

(Nawadirul Usul: 966 and Shu’abul Iman: 647)

The narration is suitable to quote as the statement of Hasan Al Basri (rahimahullah).

(٩٦٦) – حدثنا محمد، قال: حدثنا المعلى، عن معتمر، قال: سمعت أبا سعيد يقول: سمعت الحسن يقول: «أكثروا الاستغفار في بيوتكم، وعلى موائدكم، وفي طرقكم، وفي أسواقكم، وفي مجالسكم، وأينما كنتم، فإنكم لا تدرون أي حين تنزل المغفرة».

(٦٤٧) – أخبرنا أبو حازم عمر بن أحمد الحافظ، حدثنا أبو الحسن محمد بن أحمد بن زكريا، حدثنا أبو سعيد محمد بن شاذان الجندفرجي، حدثنا إسحاق بن إبراهيم الحنظلي، أخبرنا المعتمر بن سليمان قال: سمعت معمرا أبا سعيد القطان يقول: سمعت الحسن البصري يقول: «أكثروا الاستغفار في بيوتكم، وعلى موائدكم وفي طرقكم، وفي أسواقكم، وفي مجالسكم، وأين ما كنتم فإنكم لا تدرون في أي وقت تنزل البركة».
