Would you be so kind as to please provide the source and authenticity of the following Hadith:
Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam) has mentioned: ‘Indeed I hope to intercede on the Day of Qiyamah as the number of trees and clay on the earth.’
Kindly clarify what is meant by ‘clay’? Does it mean pebbles on earth?
Imam Ahmad (rahimahullah) has recorded this Hadith on the authority of Sayyiduna Buraydah (radiyallahu ‘anhu).
(Musnad Ahmad, vol. 5 pg. 347)
‘Allamah Iraqi, Munawi, and Azizi (rahimahumullah) have all graded the chain of this Hadith as sound (Hasan).
(Al-Mughni ‘An Hamlil Asfar, Hadith: 4516, At-Taysir, vol. 1 pg. 368, and As-Sirajul Munir, vol. 2 pg. 52; Also see: Faydhul Qadir, Hadith: 2639)
This Hadith discusses the intercession (shafa’ah) of Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam) along with the innumerable amount of people Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam) will intercede for.
‘Allamah Munawi (rahimahullah) has mentioned that the word used in the Hadith, مدر, refers to clumps or pieces of clay/mud. He has further explained that this phrase was used [as a figure of speech or a metaphor] so as to denote an excessively large number of people that can only be enumerated by Allah Ta’ala.
(Faydhul Qadir, Hadith: 2639)
