Question
I am looking for a Hadith which states that a Sahabi’s name was Shaytan ibn Qurt and Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) changed his name.
Answer
Imam Ahmad (rahimahullah) has recorded the following Hadith:
Muslim ibn ‘Abdillah Al Azdi relates: “Abdullah ibn Qurt Al Azdi (radiyallahu ‘anhu) once came to Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) and Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) asked him, ‘What is your name?’ He replied, ‘Shaytan ibn Qurt.’ Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said: ‘You are ‘Abdullah ibn Qurt.'”
(Musnad Ahmad, vol. 4 pg. 350)
‘Allamah Haythami (rahimahullah) has declared the narrators reliable (rijaluhu thiqat). Hafiz Ibn Hajar (rahimahullah) has declared the chain sound (hasan).
