Speak less except when it comes to nine things

Question

Is this statement reliable?

Answer

Imam Abu Bakr ibn Abi Shaybah (rahimahullah) has recorded this as the statement of Ar Rabi’ ibn Khuthaym (rahimahullah), who was a Mukhadram.

(Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah: 35998 and 36703. Also see: Hilyatul Awliya, vol. 2 pg. 109 and Tahdhibul Kamal, vol. 9 pg. 74)

The narration has been recorded with two chains and is suitable to quote.

Translation

Ar Rabi’ ibn Khuthaym (rahimahullah) said: “Speak less except when it comes to the following nine things;

  1. Glorifying Allah
  2. Saying ‘La ilaha illallah’
  3. Saying ‘Allahu Akbar’
  4. Praising Allah
  5. Asking [Allah] for good
  6. Seeking protection from evil
  7. Enjoining good
  8. Forbidding evil
  9. Reciting Quran.”

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.
