Question

Who is this statement attributed to?

“Asceticism is not only eating hard [bread] and wearing coarse clothing, but it is to curtail aspirations and to anticipate death”

Answer

‘Allamah Dhahabi (rahimahullah) has cited this as the statement of Imam Sufyan Thawri (rahimahullah).

(Siyaru A’lamin Nubala, vol. 7, pg. 243)

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.
