Is this Hadith authentic?

Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) taught us that, when you give charity on behalf of the deceased, the news is brought to them in their graves:

“O Companion of the deep grave! This is a gift which your family has gifted you so accept it. Then it [the sadaqah] enters upon him and he is delighted by it and rejoices. His neighbours who didn’t have anything gifted to them are saddened.” [Tabarani]

 

Answer

Imam Tabarani (rahimahullah) has recorded this Hadith on the authority of Sayyiduna Anas ibn Malik (radiyallahu ‘anhu).

Sayyiduna Anas ibn Malik (radiyallahu ‘anhu) reported that he heard Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) say:

“When a person passes away and his family gives charity on his behalf, Jibril (‘alayhis salam) gifts it to him on a platter of celestial light. He stands at the edge of the grave and says, “O inhabitant of the deep grave! This is a gift which your family has gifted to you, so accept it. Then [the charity] enters upon him and he is delighted by it and rejoices. His neighbours who didn’t have anything gifted to them are saddened.”

(Al Mu’jamul Awsat, Hadith: 6500)

‘Allamah Haythami (rahimahullah) has quoted Imam Azdi (rahimahullah) who has declared one of the narrators a liar.

(Majma’uz Zawaid, vol. 3, pg. 139, Hadith: 4832)

The narration is therefore not suitable to quote. However, there are other narrations that prove the actual validity of isaal-thawab. See a detailed article here and here.

(٦٥٠٠) – حدثنا محمد بن داود بن أسلم الصدفي، نا عبيد الله بن عبد الله المنكدري، نا محمد بن إسماعيل بن أبي فديك قال: سمعت أبا محمد الشامي، يحدث أنه سمع أبا هريرة يذكر، أنه  سمع أنس بن مالك يقول: سمعت رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم يقول: «ما من أهل بيت يموت منهم ميت فيتصدقون عنه بعد موته، إلا أهداها إليه جبريل عليه السلام على طبق من نور، ثم يقف على شفير القبر، فيقول: يا صاحب القبر العميق، هذه هدية أهداها إليك أهلك فاقبلها، فيدخل عليه، فيفرح بها ويستبشر، ويحزن جيرانه الذين لا يهدى إليهم بشيء».
لا يروى هذا الحديث عن أنس إلا بهذا الإسناد، تفرد به ابن أبي فديك.

(٤٨٣٢) – وعن أنس بن مالك قال: سمعت رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم يقول: «ما من أهل بيت يموت منهم ميت فيتصدقون عنه بعد موته إلا أهداها له جبريل عليه السلام على طبق من نور، ثم يقف على شفير القبر فيقول: يا صاحب القبر العميق، هذه هدية أهداها إليك أهلك فاقبلها، فيدخل عليه فيفرح بها ويستبشر، ويحزن جيرانه الذين لا يهدى إليهم شيء».
رواه الطبراني في الأوسط، وفيه أبو محمد الشامي قال عنه الأزدي: كذاب.
