Question

Is the du’a of Adam (‘alayhis salam) which he recited at the Ka’bah when he was sent to earth authentic?

Please mention the Arabic text and the translation as well.

Answer

Imam Tabarani (rahimahullah) has recorded this narration.

Sayyidah ‘Aaishah (radiyallahu ‘anha) reported: “When Allah Ta’ala sent Adam (‘alayhis salam) to earth he stood in front of the Ka’bah, prayed two rak’ahs of Salah. Allah then inspired him to say the following supplication:

Allahumma innaka ta’lamu sarirati wa ‘alaniyati faqbal ma’dhirati wa ta’lamu hajati fa a’atini su’ li wa ta’lamu ma fi nafsi faghfir li dhambi. Allahumma inni as-aluka imanan yubashiru qalbi wa yaqinan sadiqan hatta a’alamu annahu la yusibuni illa ma katabta li wa ridan bima qasamta li

Allah Ta’ala then revealed to him, O Adam I have accepted your tawbah and pardoned your error. If anyone supplicates with these words his sins will be pardoned, I will suffice all his concerns, I will repel Shaytan from him, I will accomplish every transaction and the world will come to him even if he does not desire it.”

(Al Mu’jamul Awsat, Hadith: 5971)

Despite the chain of Tabarani being very weak, Hafiz Ibn Hajar Al ‘Asqalani (rahimahullah) has cited other chains for this narration and has stated that due to these corroborating chains, the Hadith comes up to a level which makes it suitable to practice upon for issues like these.
