I wanted to inquire on the authenticity of the incident wherein Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) fell unconscious when he heard a Quran reader reciting Verse 12 from Surah Al Muzzammil.
Can it be quoted?
Imam Bayhaqi (rahimahullah) has recorded this narration -mursalan- with a weak chain.
Abu Harb ibn Abil Aswad (rahimahullah) relates: “Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) heard a man recite, ‘Verily we have [in Jahannam] handcuffs and the blazing fire and food that gets stuck in the throat’ (Surah Al Muzzammil, Verse: 12-13) and fell unconscious.”
(Shu’abul Iman, Hadith: 889)
A similar narration appears in books of Zuhd. This version suggests that Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) recited this Verse himself and fell unconscious.
(Refer: Kitabuz Zuhd of Imam Waki’, pg. 80, Kitabuz Zuhd of Imam Ahmad: 146 and Kitabuz Zuhd of Imam Hannad: 266)
The narration in question is suitable to quote.

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.

This teaches us to listen to the Quran whilst contemplating on its meaning. There are many such incidents from the Sahabah and those after them (radiyallahu’anhum).
May Allah Ta’ala grant us the ability to follow suit.
