The severity of the pangs of death (sakarat)

Question

I heard the following narration in a bayan:

Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said:

“A dying person experiences the pain of three hundred (300) swords being pierced into his body”

Kindly provide the reference and the authenticity.

Answer

Hasan Al Basri (rahimahullah) reports -مرسلا- that when Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) was discussing the agonies of death, he said :

“It is equivalent to being struck three hundred times with a sword”

(Kitabul Mawt of Hafiz ibn Abid Dunya, with a reliable chain. Refer: Al Mughni ‘An Hamlil Asfar, Hadith: 4380. Also see Sharhus Sudur of ‘Allamah Suyuti, pg. 100)

‘Allamah Zabidi (rahimahullah) states that some narrations mention it is equivalent to being struck one hundred (100) times and others mention one thousand (1000) times.

(Ithafus Sadah Al Muttaqin, vol. 10 pg. 260)

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.
