The three signs of ignorance

Question

Kindly mention the Arabic text and reference for this narration:

Abud Darda (radiyallahu ‘anhu) said: “The sign of ignorance is three; Pride and a lot of speaking in what a person does not know and to forbid something but carry it out” (Ibn ‘Abdil Barr)

Answer

This narration is cited in Jami’u Bayanil ‘Ilmi Wa Fadlihi of Imam Ibn ‘Abdil Barr (rahimahullah) without a chain.

(Jami’u Bayanil ‘Ilmi Wa Fadlihi: 963)

Arabic text

قال أبو الدرداء: علامة الجهل ثلاث: العجب وكثرة المنطق فيما لا يعنيه وأن ينهى عن شيء ويأتيه

Translation

Sayyiduna Abud Darda (radiyallahu ‘anhu) said: “There are three signs of ignorance; Vanity/pride, excessive speaking about things that do not concern a person and prohibiting [others] from carrying out something but carrying it out yourself.”

A similar statement of Sayyiduna Abud Darda (radiyallahu ‘anhu) is recorded in Tarikh Dimashq, as part of a longer narration. The Arabic text of this version is as follows:

إذا رأيتم فيه ثلاث خصال العجب وكثرة المنطق فيما لا يعنيه وأن يجد على الناس فيما يأتي مثله فإن ذلك علامة الجاهل

(Tarikh Dimashq, vol. 47 pg. 175)

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.
