Question

من لم يتورع فى تعلمه ابتلاه الله تعالى بأحد ثلاثة أشياء: إما أن يميته فى شبابه، أو يوقعه فى الرساتيق، أو يبتليه بخدمة السلطان

What is the authenticity of this Hadith?

Answer

I have not come across this narration in any Hadith collection, nor have I come across the chain of narrators. I am therefore unable to verify the authenticity. This narration appears in Ta’limul Muta’allim (pg. 126), a non-Hadith source without any chain.

I could locate the following:

Imam ‘Abdullah ibn Al Mubarak (rahimahullah) said: “Whoever is miserly/conceals his knowledge will suffer in one of three ways; He will either die [early], or he will forget or he will follow the rulers (i.e., sell his knowledge for their wealth.)

(Tadribur Rawi, vol. 4, pg. 553)

Translation of the narration in question

Whoever does not fear Allah/be cautious when studying knowledge, Allah Ta’ala will test him with with one of three things; He will either die young, or Allah Ta’ala will place him in the farming industry or Allah will test him by making him serve the ruler.

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.
