Question
My Beloved Shaykh, I read in one of your answers, that the Prophet (sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam) made du’a and the sun was returned to a previous position so Sayyiduna ‘Ali (radiyallahu ‘anhu) could pray ‘Asr. Could you please cite the complete Hadith? Does this Hadith mean time travel is some kind of way possible? I am referring to this answer: http://www.hadithanswers.com/hadith-really-bukhari/ JazakAllahu khayran.
Answer
Sayyidatuna Asma bint ‘Umais (radiyallahu ‘anha) reports that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam) was once receiving wahy (revelation) while his head was on the lap of Sayyiduna ‘Ali (radiyallahu’anhu). This resulted in Ali (radiyallahu’anhu) not having an opportunity to offer his ‘Asr salah until the sun had already set. Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam) asked him: “O ‘Ali! have you prayed (‘Asr)?” He replied: “No”
Rasulullah (sallallahu’alaihi wasallam) then made the following du’a:
“O Allah! indeed he (‘Ali) was engaged in your obedience and the obedience of your Messenger, so return the sun for him”
Asma (radiyallahu’anha) says: “I had seen the sun set, then reappear after sunset!”
(Sharh Mushkilil Athar of Imam Tahawi (rahimahullah), Hadith: 1067)
Similar incidents have been recorded about previous Prophets as well. See Fathul Bari, Hadith: 3124.
Allah Ta’ala is capable of everything, even creating time travel for his chosen ones.
And He alone Knows best,
