Question

What is the reference and authenticity of the following Hadith?

Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said: “There is no eye that is filled with tears except that Allah forbids that entire body from the fire and there are no tears that flow down the cheeks, except that no darkness nor humiliation will cover that face. If a person weeps in a given nation, they will all be shown mercy and there is nothing except that it has an amount and a balance, except the tear, as it extinguishes seas of fire.”

 

Answer

Imam ‘Abdur Razzaq and Bayhaqi (rahimahumallah) have recorded this narration as a Hadith of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) on the authority of Hasan al Basri (rahimahullah) –mursalan– with a weak chain.

(Musannaf ‘Abdur Razzaq, Hadith: 20292, Shu’abul Iman, Hadith: 790)

Imam Bayhaqi (rahimahullah) has also recorded this narration as the statement of Hasan al Basri (rahimahullah). The wording of this version is as follows:

“There is no eye that is filled with tears except that Allah forbids that entire body from the fire. If the tears flow down the cheek, then darkness and disgrace will never come upon his face. All deeds have a measure and [allocated] reward, except tears, for they can extinguish seas of fire. If a man cries out of the fear of Allah Ta’ala among a [group] of people, I have hope that the entire group of people will be shown mercy due to his crying.”

(Shu’abul Iman, Hadith: 791)

‘Allamah Mundhiri (rahimahullah) has stated the this version [i.e., the non marfu’ version, recorded as the statement of Hasan Al Basri and other Tabi’un] seems to be more correct. The narration should therefore be quoted as the statement of Hasan al Basri (rahimahullah).

(رواه البيهقي هكذا مرسلا، وفيه راو لم يسم، وروى عن الحسن البصري، وأبي عمران الجوني، وخالد بن معدان غير مرفوع وهو أشبه)

(٢٠٢٩٢) – أخبرنا عبد الرزاق، قال: أخبرنا شيخ من أهل البصرة، عن شيخ لهم، عن عمر بن سعيد، عن مسلم بن يسار، قال: قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم: «ما اغرورقت عين بمائها، إلا حرم الله ذلك الجسد على النار، ولا سالت على خدها فيرهق ذلك الوجه قتر ولا ذلة، ولو أن باكيا بكى في أمة من الأمم لرحموا، وما من شيء إلا له مقدار وميزان إلا الدمعة فإنه يطفأ بها بحار من نار».

شعب الإيمان:
(٧٩٠) – أخبرنا أبو عبد الله الحافظ، أخبرنا أبو عبد الله الصنعاني، حدثنا إسحاق بن إبراهيم، أخبرنا عبد الرزاق، عن معمر، عن شيخ، لهم، عن عمرو بن سعيد، عن مسلم بن يسار قال: قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم: «ما اغرورقت عين بمائها إلا حرم الله سائر ذلك الجسد على النار، ولا سالت قطرة على خدها فيرهق ذلك الوجه قترة، ولا ذلة ولو أن باكيا بكى في أمة من الأمم رحموا وما من شيء، إلا له مقدار وميزان إلا الدمعة فإنه يطفأ بها بحار من النار».
هذا مرسل وقد روي من قول الحسن البصري كما…

(٧٩١) – أخبرنا أبو طاهر محمد بن محمد بن محمش الفقيه، حدثنا أبو حامد بن بلال البزار، حدثنا أبو الأزهر، حدثنا عمرو بن محمد، عن سلمة بن جعفر الآجري، عن أبي الحسين، عن الحسن قال: «ما اغرورقت عين بمائها إلا حرم الله جسدها على النار فإن سالت على خد صاحبها لم يرهق، وجهه قتر ولا ذلة أبدا وليس من عمل إلا له وزن وثواب إلا الدمعة فإنها تطفئ بحورا من النار، ولو أن رجلا بكى من خشية الله تعالى في أمة من الأمم لرجوت أن ترحم تلك الأمة ببكاء ذلك الرجل».
