Question

Please give the reference for this hadith;

“Sin is that which agitates the conscience.”

Answer

Sayyiduna Nawwas ibn Sam’an (radiyallahu ‘anhu) reports that he asked Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) about piety and sin, to which he said:

“Piety is [mainly made up of] good character, and sin is that which troubles the heart and you dislike that others become aware of it.”

(Sahih Muslim, Hadith: 6463)

‘Allamah Qurtubi (rahimahullah) mentions that the heart that is referred to here is that which has acquired the light (nur) of Iman and the knowledge of Islam.

A sinner’s conscience is not considered in this case.

(Al-Mufhim, Hadith: 2460)
