Question

Please tell me if there is a short du’a I can recite to attain the fear of Allah Ta’ala? Please give me the meaning, transliteration and Arabic text.

 

Answer

You may recite the following du’a which Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) would often recite [as part of a longer du’a] when gathered with the Sahabah (radiyallahu ‘anhum):

اللّٰهُمَّ اقْسِمْ لَنَا مِنْ خَشْيَتِكَ مَا يَحُولُ بَيْنَنَا وَبَيْنَ مَعَاصِيكَ

Allahummaq sim lana min khasyatika ma yahulu baynana wa bayna ma’asika

(Sunan Tirmidhi, Hadith: 3502)

Translation

O Allah! Apportion for us your fear, [such a portion] that will intervene between us and your disobedience

In addition to reciting du’as, one should make a concerted effort to avoid sin. Frequenting the company of the pious and Allah fearing individuals is also an effective method of developing taqwa.

(٣٥٠٢) – حدثنا علي بن حجر قال: أخبرنا ابن المبارك قال: أخبرنا يحيى بن أيوب، عن عبيد الله بن زحر، عن خالد بن أبي عمران، أن ابن عمر، قال: قلما كان رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم يقوم من مجلس حتى يدعو بهؤلاء الدعوات لأصحابه: «اللهم اقسم لنا من خشيتك ما يحول بيننا وبين معاصيك، ومن طاعتك ما تبلغنا به جنتك، ومن اليقين ما تهون به علينا مصيبات الدنيا، ومتعنا بأسماعنا وأبصارنا وقوتنا ما أحييتنا، واجعله الوارث منا، واجعل ثأرنا على من ظلمنا، وانصرنا على من عادانا، ولا تجعل مصيبتنا في ديننا، ولا تجعل الدنيا أكبر همنا ولا مبلغ علمنا، ولا تسلط علينا من لا يرحمنا».
