Question
Is the incident regarding a mother giving the last date to her daughters authentic? The Hadith ends with the words:
وما يعجبك من ذلك؟ لقد رحمها الله برحمتها صبييها
Answer
This narration is recorded in Al Adabul Mufrad of Imam Bukhari (rahimahullah) and Mustadrak Hakim. Imam Hakim (rahimahullah) has declared the Hadith authentic and ‘Allamah Dhahabi (rahimahullah) concurs.
Sayyiduna Anas ibn Malik (radiyallahu ‘anhu) reported that a lady once came to ‘Aishah (radiyallahu ‘anha) [begging]. ‘Aishah (radiyallahu ‘anha) gave her three dates. She handed one date each to her [two] daughters and kept one for herself. Her daughters ate their dates and then looked towards their mother. She split the remaining date in half and gave each child a piece. When Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) returned and Sayyidah ‘Aishah (radiyallahu ‘anha) informed him of what had transpired, he said, “Are you surprised by that? Allah will show her mercy because of her mercy towards her children.”

(٨٩) – حدثنا مسلم بن إبراهيم قال: حدثنا ابن فضالة قال: حدثنا بكر بن عبد الله المزني، عن أنس بن مالك: جاءت امرأة إلى عائشة رضي الله عنها، فأعطتها عائشة ثلاث تمرات، فأعطت كل صبي لها تمرة، وأمسكت لنفسها تمرة، فأكل الصبيان التمرتين ونظرا إلى أمهما، فعمدت إلى التمرة فشقتها، فأعطت كل صبي نصف تمرة، فجاء النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم فأخبرته عائشة فقال: «وما يعجبك من ذلك؟ لقد رحمها الله برحمتها صبييها».

(٧٣٤٩) – أخبرنا أبو الحسن محمد بن علي بن بكر العدل ابن ابنة إبراهيم بن هانئ، ثنا السري بن خزيمة، ثنا مسلم بن إبراهيم، ثنا عبد الرحمن بن فضالة، ثنا بكر بن عبد الله المزني، عن أنس بن مالك رضي الله عنه، قال: جاءت امرأة إلى عائشة رضي الله عنها تسأل ومعها صبيان فأعطتها ثلاث تمرات، فأعطت كل صبي تمرة تمرة، وأمسكت لنفسها تمرة، فأكل الصبيان التمرتين، فعمدت إلى التمرة فشقتها نصفين فأعطت كل صبي لها نصف تمرة، فجاء النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم فأخبرته فقال: «وما يعجبك منها لقد رحمها الله برحمتها صبيها» هذا حديث صحيح الإسناد ولم يخرجاه
