Question

I am looking for the reference and authenticity of this Hadith:

نفس المؤمن معلقة ما كان عليه دين

 

Answer

This Hadith is recorded in Musnad Ahmad and other Hadith collections on the authority of Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (radiyallahu ‘anhu).

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (radiyallahu ‘anhu) reported that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said: “A Believer’s soul is suspended as long as he has a debt.”

(Musnad Ahmad, vol. 2, pg. 440, Hadith: 9679 and vol. 2, pg. 475, Hadith: 10156)

Imam Ibn Hibban (rahimahullah) has declared the Hadith authentic (sahih).

عن أبي هريرة أن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم قال: «نفس المؤمن معلقة ما كان عليه دين».
