Kindly provide the reference for this narration.

Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said: “Sometimes a man and a woman live in the obedience of Allah for sixty years then before they die they cause such harm in their bequests that Jahannam becomes warranted for them” [i.e. They cause harm to the heirs by either bequeathing more than one third, or they choose to gift all of their wealth to one heir to deprive the other heirs etc.]

 

Answer

Imams Abu Dawud and Tirmidhi (rahimahumallah) have recorded this Hadith on the authority of Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (radiyallahu ‘anhu).

(Sunan Tirmidhi, Hadith: 2117, Sunan Abi Dawud, Hadith: 2859)

 

Imam Tirmidhi (rahimahullah) has graded the Hadith sound (hasanun gharib).

Unfortunately, this is a common malady, even among some outwardly righteous people. One should always consult reliable ‘Alims before attempting any such deed.

سنن الترمذي (٢١١٧): حدثنا نصر بن علي الجهضمي قال: حدثنا عبد الصمد بن عبد الوارث قال: حدثنا نصر بن علي، وهو جد هذا النصر، قال: حدثنا الأشعث بن جابر، عن شهر بن حوشب، عن أبي هريرة أنه حدثه، عن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم قال: «إن الرجل ليعمل والمرأة بطاعة الله ستين سنة ثم يحضرهما الموت فيضاران في الوصية فتجب لهما النار»، ثم قرأ علي أبو هريرة: {من بعد وصية يوصى بها أو دين غير مضار وصية من الله} ـ إلى قوله ـ {ذلك الفوز العظيم} هذا حديث حسن غريب، ونصر بن علي الذي روى عن الأشعث بن جابر هو جد نصر بن علي الجهضمي.

سنن أبي داود (٢٨٥٩): حدثنا عبدة بن عبد الله، أخبرنا عبد الصمد، حدثنا نصر بن على الحداني، حدثنا الأشعث بن جابر، حدثني شهر بن حوشب أن أبا هريرة حدثه، أن رسول الله – صلى الله عليه وسلم – قال: «إن الرجل ليعمل أو المرأة بطاعة الله ستين سنة، ثم يحضرهما الموت فيضاران في الوصية فتجب لهما النار» قال: وقرأ على أبو هريرة من ها هنا {من بعد وصية يوصى بها أو دين غير مضار} حتى بلغ: {وذلك الفوز العظيم}.
