Question

I saw this quoted as a saying of Imam Shafi’i and require a reference for it:

Answer

‘Allamah Dhahabi (rahimahullah) has cited these words of Imam Shafi’i (rahimahullah) as part of a longer statement. The portion in question is as follows:

Imam Shafi’i (rahimahullah) said: “Abstaining from sins and leaving out matters which do not concern you will enlighten your heart…”

(Siyaru A’lamin Nubala, vol. 10, pg. 98)

Imam Bayhaqi (rahimahullah) has cited the following version:

Imam Shafi‘i (rahimahullah) once said:

“If a person wants Allah to open or illuminate his heart, he should avoid speaking about things that don’t concern him, stay away from sins, and distance himself from disobedience [of Allah]…”

(Manaqibush Shafi’i, vol. 2, pg. 171)

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.
