The full version of the Hadith ‘Eat, drink and wear nice garments but abstain from wastage’

Question

Is this one Hadith or two separate Hadiths?

Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said: “Eat, drink and give sadaqah but abstain from wastefulness and pride. God Almighty loves to see the effect of His blessings on His servant.”

Answer

Imams Hakim, Ahmad and Bayhaqi (rahimahumullah) have recorded this as one Hadith on the authority of Sayyuduna ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Amr (radiyallahu’anhu).

The wording as appears in Musnad Ahmad is as follows:

Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said: “Eat, drink, give charity and wear clothing without arrogance or wastage. Allah loves that his bounties are seen on his servant.”

(Mustadrak Hakim, vol. 4 pg. 135, Musnad Ahmad, vol. 2 pg. 182, Shu’abul Iman, Hadith: 4251 and 5786)

Imam Tirmidhi (rahimahullah) has recorded the last part of the Hadith only.

(Sunan Tirmidhi, Hadith: 2819)
